A heart-warming story of love and belonging, In the Heights is heating up the Sydney Opera House this winter.
We hadn’t had the opportunity to see this show before, so we were eager to check out what the all the fuss was about when we were invited to a performance.

The Broadway smash-hit tells the story of three generations in the vibrant community of Washington Heights, layering Latin American rhythms with the energy of the borough.
Setting creator Lin-Manuel Miranda on a trajectory to superstardom, In the Heights earned 13 nominations at the 2008 Tony Awards with four wins including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The energising melting-pot of salsa, soul, hip-hop, street-dance, rap, and merengue styles won the show a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. The stage show has been performed all over the world, and was successfully adapted into a big screen film in 2021 starring Anthony Ramos.

It’s easy to see why the show has been such a big hit, with its universal themes of community, belonging, and striving for more for your family.
Even without knowing any of the songs going in, we were captivated by the soundtrack and found ourselves hanging on every word. The local cast were spectacular and delivered all the sizzle and spectacle you could hope for. The audience responded favourably throughout the show, with audible ooh-ing and ah-ing before rewarding the cast with a well earned standing ovation.

In the Heights plays a strictly limited six-week Sydney Opera House season from 20 July to 25 August.
