PHANTOM HITS SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

A history making Sydney season sees one of the most successful and much loved musicals of all time make its debut at one of the world’s most iconic venues. Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera made its highly anticipated premiere at the Sydney Opera House.

We were thrilled to be invited to opening night, where we were gobsmacked by this phenomenal show. After walking the red carpet, we took our seats (alongside Delta Goodrem no less) and were instantly swept away by this lavish production.

The Phantom haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. He’s man and mystery, a deformed genius. And in Christine, he’s found his angel of music: the young woman he would make a star. But how many lives will he sacrifice to make the music of the night?

Hit after hit punctuates the thrilling score, from the stunning romance of “Music of the Night”, “Think of Me” and “All I Ask of You” to the splendid “Masquerade” and brilliant title song.

This spectacular new staging by Cameron Mackintosh premiered with a record-breaking sell out tour of the UK followed by a 7-year tour of the United States which grossed over US$400 million and thrilled critics and audiences alike. Australia is now only the third country to see this new Phantom

With stunning new staging and scenic design, Maria Björnson’s iconic original Tony-winning costumes and many special effects including a spectacular new realisation of the show’s chandelier and underground lake.

The Opera Australia cast were, in a word spectacular. We were absolutely floored by their vocals and acting chops. Chatting with other guests in attendance, we all gushed about how moving this production was. Friends who previously attended the show on the West End happily told us that the Sydney cast were superior.

This talented Australian cast is led by Josh Piterman in the coveted lead role of the Phantom while Amy Manford takes on the role of the ingénue Christine Daaé and Blake Bowden plays Raoul Vicomte de Chagny.

The Phantom of the Opera plays a 9 week season at Sydney Opera House until October 16 before making its way to Arts Centre Melbourne from October 30th.
