Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of MARY POPPINS opened for a strictly limited season at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
We were lucky enough to be invited along to a performance and jumped at the chance of revisiting this childhood fav.
Adapted from the beloved stories by PL Travers and the original film; the magical tale of the world’s favourite Nanny comes to life on stage in this spectacular and unforgettable production. The show is full of timeless favourites Jolly Holiday, Feed the Birds, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious… showstoppers only.
The sets and costuming are magnificent, as you always get from a Disney-produced musical. (The giant umbrella alone is incredible!) Stefanie Jones was practically perfect in every way in the role of Mary. Her voice and mannerisms were exquisite. Jack Chambers – who you might remember as the season 1 winner of So You Think You Can Dance Australia – was magical in the role of Bert. He brought the house down with Step In Time and brought warmth and joy to the stage.
The show has been beautifully adapted for the stage, with the book by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes – creator of Downton Abbey. The newly-added closing number Anything Can Happen brings a tear to the eye, as the cast sing about chasing your dreams. This triumphant theatrical experience is a must-see. It leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy.
After Sydney, the show opens in Brisbane then also has a Melbourne season planned.
