ANCIENT SUPERFOOD: BONE BROTH

While the recent buzz makes it seem like yet another passing health trend, Bone Broth has been a staple for centuries. It’s literally an ancient super food.

Bone Broth is an aromatic broth of usually chicken or beef bones simmered down for 24 – 48 hours. The length of time allows the nutrients and minerals to melt out of the bones to create a powerful elixir that does wonders for your health.

Those who consume it swear by the health benefits, with studies backing up their claims.

Anti-ageing – super rich in collagen
Immunity – amino acids and minerals boost immune system and alleviate common colds
Gut health and digestion – reduces gut inflammation, while gelatin heals and seals gut
Sleep and brain function – studies show improved sleep patterns and better concentration

If you don’t have the time or energy to make your own, there are several pre-made broths that work wonders. Many supermarkets stock sealed pouches in the refrigerator section. You can use it in your cooking, or heat up a mug in the microwave. Drinking it in the style of a cup of soup is the current trend, and is warm and hearty.

You can also buy in powdered form from chemists and pharmacies. Adding a couple of teaspoons in a mug of hot water gives the same effect and is a great way to consume while you’re travelling or on the run.

One little hack we found was using the powdered form as a seasoning. Sprinkling a couple of teaspoons into pasta sauces or over mashed potatoes or veges adds a delicious flavour and is the perfect way to capitalise on its powerful health benefits.
