Get ready to get Dirrty all over again, as Christina Aguilera celebrates the 20th anniversary of her coming of age album.
Stripped was Christina Aguilera’s fourth studio, and third English-language album.
Looking to transition from the teen pop styles of her self-titled debut album (1999), she took control over this project – musically, lyrically and visually.
This is the album where she changed her public image and established her alter ago, Xtina. Musically, Stripped incorporates pop and R&B with influences from many different genres including soul, rock, hip hop and Latin music.
On the record she sang of female empowerment, abusive relationships, and coming of age. Collaborators included Lil’ Kim, Alicia Keys and Linda Perry. The album spawned 5 singles: “Dirrty,” “Beautiful,” “Fighter,” “Can’t Hold Us Down” and “The Voice Within,” with “Beautiful” winning the 2004 Grammy for ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.’ The album has sold over 10 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century.
A new 20th Anniversary Edition has been released, with two added bonus tracks. “I Will Be” was the original B-side to “Dirrty” and is a soulful ballad. The song is reminiscent of “Vanishing” from Mariah Carey’s debut album and is a beautiful showcase of Aguilera’s skill as a vocalist. Also added is the brand new Benny Benassi remix of “Beautiful” which is geared up to set dance floors alight.
To launch the 20th celebration, Christina also dropped a brand new video for “Beautiful.” The original video won a special GLAAD Award recognising its empowering images of gay and trans beauty. The new version touches on issues that have become prevalent since the original release. “Social media has transformed our relationship with our bodies, and in turn, our mental health,” Aguilera states, posting a list of resources on her website. “When you need a little more guidance and care to take charge of your mental health, these organizations are here for you.”
