GO GO GO JOSEPH

It’s been thirty years since Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat last played Australia, so we were thrilled to receive an invite to opening night in Sydney.

Following a huge response to the recent West End revival, which played two triumphant seasons at The London Palladium – the Australian tour would be the first staging of this newly reimagined production outside of the UK.

With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lyrics by Tim Rice, we were excited to experience this dazzling show at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre.

Released as a concept album in 1969, the stage version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has become one of the world’s most beloved musicals. The show features songs that have gone on to become pop and musical theatre classics, including Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door To Me, Jacob and Sons, There’s One More Angel In Heaven and Go Go Go Joseph.

Told entirely through song with the help of the Narrator, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat follows the story of Jacob’s favourite son Joseph and his eleven brothers. After many adventures, the dreamer Joseph becomes Pharaoh’s right-hand man and eventually reunites with his family.

Stars who have previously played the title character include Jason Donovan, David Dixon and Donny Osmond. This time around the title role was played by Euan Fistrovic Doidge, who really came to life during ‘Close Every Door To Me’.

The last Australian production featured a powerhouse performance from Tina Arena as the narrator. From that performance she became one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s favourite vocalists. He even chose her to open his internationally televised 50th birthday celebration at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and record the title track to his next original musical ‘Whistle Down The Wind’.

The narrator role is a mammoth part, and requires some major vocals. In the new Australian production the role is played by Paulini, who does a brilliant job. Following her musical debut in ‘The Bodyguard’ she has built a solid reputation as a leading lady. Can’t wait to see what she does next!

On the eve of his worldwide TV appearance competing in drag singing competition ‘Queen Of The Universe’, Trevor Ashley brings big presence to the stage in the role of Pharaoh.

The show got a well deserved standing ovation and the audience left the theatre buzzing. Bravo!
