It’s one of the world’s most loved musicals and nothing beats the feeling you get, going back to Rydell High.
Danny, Sandy, Kenickie, Rizzo and the whole gang are back to give you a night out, like only GREASE can!
This all-new, multi million production promised to be slicker, sexier, and more electrifying than ever before – so we were eager to head along to the Sydney premiere to see this beloved classic back on stage.
The original show opened on Broadway in 1972, but it was the film version starring John Travolta and our Olivia Newton-John which captured hearts forever. The highest grossing movie-musical of all time – GREASE has since played across the globe, triumphing with its irresistible mix of adolescent angst, vibrant physicality and 1950’s pop culture.
Having already played a season at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, this show moved into Sydney’s Capitol Theatre as a well established production, so it was a little jarring to see crew members walking on stage in full view of the audience to move set pieces.
The standouts in this production by far were the veterans. Marcia Hines played the cameo role of Teen Angel, and while her stage time was limited she made the most of every second.
Her rendition of Beauty School Dropout had the crowd roaring and was easily the highlight of the show, as Marcia added a new Gospel twist at the climax of the fever dream. She then gave pure diva energy as she returned during the curtain call for ‘Grease Is The Word’.
Patti Newton was adorable as Miss Lynch, and Jay Laga’aia brought much bravado as Vince Fontaine.
The Grease soundtrack has never gone out of style, with songs that have been embraced by every generation.
You’re The One That I Want, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Look At Me I’m Sandra Dee, Greased Lightnin’… all crowd favourites that had the audience singing along. Strangely, songs like Summer Lovin’ and Born To Hand Jive lost a lot of momentum in this production as the tempo was noticeably slowed right down.
GREASE is more than a musical; it’s a joyous, nostalgic celebration. If you’re ready to be transported back to a world of high school romance, unforgettable music, and unadulterated fun – grab your tickets now at www.greasemusical.com.au
In a classy move, the production announced the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre as their charity partner. For more info or to donate to ONJ’s incredible legacy, please visit www.onjcancercentre.org
