SUNSET BLVD AT SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

Any time we get the chance to see a show at the iconic Sydney Opera House, it’s a treat.

It’s easy to see why this venue is world renowned, with its grandiose architecture and showstopping location.

But there’s something that’s extra magical about an opening night at Sydney Opera House – and this was a special one. An epic new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical masterpiece Sunset Boulevard, starring international superstar Sarah Brightman.

As we walked the red carpet and then enjoyed a glass of champagne in the foyer, it was evident that there was an absolute buzz in the air. Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Narelda Jacobs, Anthony Callea and drag icon Maxi Shield all looked giddy with excitement as they arrived and took their seats.

Sunset Boulevard was recently revived with a totally reimagined version on the West End that will soon move to Broadway.

While that new staging starring Nicole Scherzinger completely revolutionised the show, tonight’s production was the original classic – staying true to the old world glamour and charm that made the show a hit the first time around.

This lavish musical blockbuster features stunning sets and costumes evoking the glamorous Golden Age of Hollywood.

The show features some of Lloyd Webber’s most recognisable songs With One Look, The Perfect Year, New Ways To Dream, and As If We Never Said Goodbye.

The local cast of Australian theatre royalty – led by Tim Draxl as Joe Gillis, were fantastic. Perhaps the highlight of all was hearing the spectacular orchestra playing this epic score. To hear this music swell and soar to the heights of the Opera House sails gave us chills, and I found myself humming the songs for days after.

Sunset Boulevard plays a limited season at Sydney Opera House until 1 November.
