SISTER ACT

Australia, your prayers have been answered!

The global smash hit musical sent from above has finally arrived down under. Sister Act is without doubt, the must-see new musical of the year.

Based on the blockbuster film, which quickly became a global phenomenon, Sister Act lights up the theatre and lifts your spirit with its irresistible energy and joy.

The plot is iconic – disco diva Deloris’ life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. Placed under protective custody she is hidden in the one place she shouldn’t be found – a convent. Encouraged to help the struggling choir of nuns, she helps her fellow sisters find their true voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

Stepping into the iconic Whoopi Goldberg role – Deloris Van Cartier is Casey Donovan. We last saw Casey in & Juliet – where she absolutely stole the show. Her performance of P!nk’s ‘F**kin’ Perfect’ from that production gave us chills.

And now here she is in all her glory as leading lady, and she does not disappoint. It was awesome to hear her lean into the R&B and Soul side of her voice, hitting all the runs and riffs with major diva energy and attitude.

Rhonda Burchmore as Sister Mary Lazarus is hilarious, with her knack for comedic timing on full display.

The musical uses all-original songs, written by Alan Menken. While you may not recognise his name, his credits are literally some of the most beloved of all time. He is the king of Disney showstoppers, having written the songs from The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hercules, Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Tangled, Enchanted… and that’s not even mentioning his Broadway credits like Little Shop Of Horrors, Newsies, Leap Of Faith…

Not only is he an EGOT – one of the small group of people who have won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards – but he also holds the distinction of having won more Academy Awards than any other living individual.

His brand-new Sister Act soundtrack is inspired by Motown. Fuelled with soul and disco, it will fast become your new favourite musical soundtrack.

The show has enjoyed successful runs on Broadway and the West End, picking up 5 Tony nominations and 6 Olivier nominations along the way. We saw it on Broadway back in 2011 and instantly fell in love with it. The opening night audience in Sydney related much the same, leaping to their feet and singing hallelujah.

A musical sent from above, Sister Act is joyous and uplifting in equal measures. A show that raises the spirits and warms the soul.
